Mnemonic Phrase keeps in Mnemonic Seed Storage

What is a Mnemonic Phrase which keeps in Mnemonic Seed Storage?

Typically, cryptocurrencies are stored in crypto wallets. When setting up your crypto wallet, one of the requirements is to set up a recovery passphrase to help you recover your crypto assets if you lose your crypto wallet or forget your password. That is why it is imperative to keep this phrase a secret, the same way you do your private keys. This recovery passphrase is the mnemonic phrase called the wallet recovery seed.

The mnemonic phrase comprises random words, usually between 12 to 24 words, from any language. Note that when using the recovery seed, they must be used in the exact sequence generated.

How is the Mnemonic Phrases Created?

The Mnemonic Phrases, or recovery phrase, is randomly generated by the wallet. Whether a smartphone, computer, or hardware wallet, the device creates a randomly chosen sequence of bits called entropy through cryptographically reliable processes.

In the case of Mnemonic Phrases of Bitcoin addresses (and many other crypto-assets), this entropy is encrypted with a checksum of a few bits that will detect errors in the sentence. It is then divided into 11-bit segments. Finally, each of these segments is associated with a word in the standard list of 2048 words, making it possible to form the sentence. Once the Mnemonic Phrases is generated, various hashing processes are applied to derive the keys. It went through the PBKDF2 (Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2) function, which repeatedly applies the HMAC-SHA512 function (HMAC for hash-based message authentication code): 2048 revolutions.

The number of bits of the entropy and the checksum depends on the number of words we want: for 12 words, we will have an entropy of 128 bits and a checksum of 4 bits; for 24 words, we will have an entropy of 256 bits and a checksum of 8 bits. It is possible to have 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 words per sentence.
